Bombora Custom Designs, creating recycled timber furniture

I am very excited to share these guys with you today – Bombora Custom Furniture – a small business, creating amazing furniture from recycled materials. Established as a company in November 2013, Head Designer Luke Collins was making furniture for more than 6 years before this. Not traditionally trained as a designer, Luke creates his pieces organically, seeking inspiration from a wide range of sources so that his furniture is original and not influenced by what others have done. Luke’s past life was as a firefighter which enabled him to work two jobs whilst the business was being established.

Co-owner Alison Collins came on board whilst on maternity leave from her Osteopathic practice, to take the business to the next level and never looked back. She is in charge of all things other than making furniture!

The Bombora aesthetic and design philosophy centres around the silhouette of straight lines, which lets the texture, flowing grains and striking sap lines of the recycled timber, be the unique feature of each piece. The result is a modern take on mid century simplicity, with a rich warmth and sense of the organic.

For Luke, creativity comes from “converting necessity into something of beauty”. Taking what the client needs for their home to display, hide or house things, and designing something that transcends the purpose  of the object with a timelessness and style adaptability that will see it last the decades. This is the true heart of sustainability.

The design process is fluid and continues into the build of the piece as the timber is chosen and laid out. The timber is moved until each piece looks its best. Bombora Furniture is not mass produced on a production line. Each piece is crafted by a single furniture maker who takes pride in seeing the project to completion.

Luke’s favorite recycled material to work with is a species of Eucalyptus local to the southern parts of Australia called Messmate. Luke loves this timber because of its character of flowing grain lines, frequent sap lines and alternating tones. Luke also loves to get his hands on timber with a bit of local history such as from the Princess pier or Barwon Heads bridge.

Clients either approach Bombara wanting a design from their current portfolio,  or request something completely new to fit their home and lifestyle perfectly. Each piece is made to order, which ensure you get exactly what you want. Clients can be as involved as they want in the process including coming and choosing the exact pieces of timber they want. The couple are also happy to use the wonders of the internet for clients that are interstate.

I am in love with all of these pieces! Do you have a favourite?
