Trying to live a more eco life can be very hard when you are surrounded at every turn by unsustainable choices. We visited the Melbourne Market recently when I was there for Design and Decor, with our own bags and keep cups. We were shocked to see the number of people getting take-away cups and then sitting at the tables in the eating area, when there were ceramic cup options, as well as all the plastic plates and cutlery everywhere…It just hurt my heart. We also had to SHOUT a few times at each fruit and veg store NOT to give us a plastic bag…it is hard but we have to do what we can and keep speaking out to make changes. This is one small part of the picture when it comes to a more sustainable life – a very important one, but there are many others. At Recycled Interiors our passion is interiors and creating homes that look beautiful, while treading more lightly on the planet. I strongly believe that it is important to create a home you love, and that design and decoration are an essential part of human life. How you do this matters. There is so much waste and so many unethical products in the homewares and furniture industry. There are also a lot of same same, soulless looking interiors. The best way to create a home that is more sustainable AND will stand the test of time, is to create a look starting from your personality, your loves, your stories, your collections. Combining old with new, things that have their own stories to tell, will create that perfect space. It is not about one particular look, and everything about the feeling.
I had a huge burst of design and life inspiration from an unexpected source at Design and Decor. I heard celebrity designer Martyn Lawrence-Bullard speak and was captivated by his approach to design, which is essentially the same message we share about designing from the heart, with an individual approach. I later bought his book Design and Decoration, and had a chat with him at his book signing. Martyn is a multi-award winning Los Angeles-based interior designer renowned for his broad range of styles and eclectic, yet sophisticated and warm interiors. Martyn has been consistently named as one of the world’s top 100 interior designers by Architectural Digest, featured permanently in Elle Décor’s A-List, and named one of the top 25 designers by The Hollywood Reporter. A popular television personality, Martyn starred in the hit Bravo series, Million Dollar Decorators and hosted Channel 4’s Hollywood Me in the UK, along with a multitude of design television programs spanning over 65 countries.
In reply to my question about what makes for a sustainable interior, Martyn says “I believe that to believe in yourself and your own taste creates the most memorable interiors. A personal space is the most honest interior and echoes the passion of design in the individual who created it. Passion is after all the most important ingredient in an interior. Also decorate with things you love, not because they are precious or in fashion, or trendy …. use them because you connect with them and whatever it is – a piece of art or a table, your mother’s china or a flea market find – when you incorporate these highly personal items it creates not only personality but also longevity in your interior, making it a sustainable interior that you will enjoy for years to come.”
THE STUNNING CHATEAU GUTSCH IN SWITZERLAND BY MARTYN LAWRENCE BULLARD
What is wonderful about Martyn’s designs, is his impressive mastery of a broad range of styles, coupled with his fine attention to detail and commitment to quality. As a result he is internationally acclaimed. He creates personal and eclectic spaces that burst with personality. His work has appeared in over 4,000 publications worldwide including Architectural Digest, ELLE Décor, House &Garden, W, Vogue, House Beautiful, Harper’s Bazaar, Departures, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times, among others. His most recent cover of Architectural Digest, featuring the homes of Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian, was one of the publication’s best-selling issues of all time. He has published two titles, Live, Love, & Decorate, and most recently, Design & Decoration, which shares inside the glamorous world of eclectic and sophisticated interiors he creates, in exquisite detail. I am now using this beautiful book as an inspiration gallery.
While you might find Martyn’s A-list clientele including Kendall Jenner, Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Tommy Hilfiger, Cher, Ellen Pompeo, and Eva Mendes, (to name a few) to be a far cry from your own home and indeed reality, his eclectic style and approach to design, are definitely something to be inspired by for any home. He believes that spaces should “reflect personality, humour, fantasy and especially comfort”. Martyn has also overseen the design of several premier hospitality properties around the world including the iconic Colony Palms Hotel in Palm Springs, Chateau Gütsch in Lucerne, Switzerland, and Chef Rick Bayless’s flagship Red O restaurant; he is currently overseeing hotel designs in Santa Barbara, Istanbul, and Miami Beach, along with the Four Seasons Residences in Los Angeles.
In addition to his design studio, Martyn has created a stunning collection of indoor and outdoor fabrics, wallpaper, furniture, and home accessories. He also has designed several collections for the fabric house Schumacher, tile lines for Ann Sacks, rugs with The Rug Company, a collection of dinnerware with porcelain maker Haviland Limoges, as well as collaborations with silver maker Christofle and crystal manufacturer Daum. Martyn recently opened his own Atelier shop on Melrose Ave in West Hollywood. When not traveling the globe designing exquisite interiors and searching for one-of-a-kind antiques and decor, Martyn splits his time between his romantic Hollywood Hills retreat and a mid-century masterpiece in the Southern California desert. Like many of you, he is a collector of old and beautiful pieces, which may later take pride of place in someone’s home.

Whilst Martyn might be working with Hollywood celebs and sourcing items from locations across the world for his designs, the same process applies when decorating your own home. The price point does not matter. There are so many people making wonderful items locally, and simply stunning vintage pieces to be found. You do not have to scarifice style and design for the sake of our planet. Go your own way and decorate with heart. Martyn’s philosophy of being honest in designing your home, believing in what you bring to your home, reflecting truly who you are, is right at the core of our philosohpy here at Recycled Interiors. It is easy to create a beautiful home and decorate with style by using vintage pieces and locally made quality furniture and homewares that stand the test of time and speak to your heart.
If you love Martyn’s work as much as I do, you can see more on his website and find his books here.
